The death of truck driver Henno Stokes in a crash on the N1 near Kroonvaal has left a family grieving and the trucking industry mobilising support.

Stokes died following a collision involving multiple vehicles, including heavy motor vehicles that caught fire at the scene.

The appeal, issued by SA Trucker, frames the loss in stark and personal terms. “The roads have taken one of our own,” it reads. “Henno Stokes, a man who worked hard to provide for his family and keep the wheels of this country turning.”

Stokes leaves behind his wife, Carin Stokes, and their young son, Aiden. The emotional toll on the family is central to the appeal. “Behind every driver is a family, and today that family is broken,” SA Trucker writes.

Family under pressure after sudden loss

Carin Stokes now faces raising their child alone while dealing with serious health challenges. She is living with lupus, a condition that already complicates daily life. SA Trucker highlights the scale of this burden. “The man who carried the load for his family is no longer there, and now the weight of everything rests on Carin’s shoulders,” the appeal reads.

In response, a crowdfunding campaign has been launched on BackaBuddy to assist the family with immediate and ongoing needs. The campaign is aimed at covering funeral costs and providing financial relief as Carin Stokes navigates this period of loss and uncertainty while caring for their son.

The appeal turns into a direct call for collective action. “We are calling on all drivers, fleet owners, operators, and anyone who can help to support this family,” it states.

The purpose of the support is set out clearly. “Donations will assist with funeral costs and provide support to Carin and Aiden as they try to rebuild their lives,” the appeal notes.

The message emphasises accessibility and urgency. “No amount is too small. Even sharing this post can make a difference,” it adds.

In a closing appeal that reflects both grief and solidarity, SA Trucker writes, “Let’s not let this family walk this road alone.”

The tribute ends with a message to the fallen driver. “Rest easy, driver. Your last trip is done. We’ll take it from here for your family.”

Crash scene and ongoing investigation

The crash that claimed Stokes’ life resulted in the full closure of the N1 between Kroonvaal Plaza and the Kroonvaal Engen garages. Emergency services responded to a scene involving at least two trucks and two light motor vehicles.

The situation escalated when the heavy vehicles caught fire, prompting fire services to contain the blaze while law enforcement secured the area. Traffic was brought to a standstill in both directions.
