In a heart-wrenching case that has shocked the community of Botlokwa, a 43-year-old grandmother has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for assaulting her four-year-old grandson.

The Morebeng Regional Court delivered its verdict, convicting the woman of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, despite her plea of not guilty. The charges stemmed from a series of brutal assaults that began in early 2023, when the young victim, who struggled with bedwetting, became the target of his grandmother's rage.

Described by witnesses as a "horrific ordeal," the grandmother used a tree branch to inflict pain on the child, leading to multiple scars on his body and face. In a chilling segment of the testimony, it was revealed that the accused even attempted to mutilate the boy's private parts in a disturbing effort to stop him from wetting the bed.

This brutal abuse only came to light after neighbours and the grandmother's former boyfriend intervened, expressing their concerns to authorities, which led to her arrest. Emphasising the gravity of the situation, State Advocate Andrew Kgatla argued that the grandmother had caused irreversible trauma to a child who was meant to be safe in her care. During the proceedings, he painted a picture of a child living in constant fear, aware that any instance of bedwetting could lead to further horrific consequences.

In advocating for the severity of the sentence, Kgatla highlighted that there were no substantial or compelling circumstances that justified leniency, underlining the court's duty to protect vulnerable members of society, particularly children.

Following the sentencing, Advocate Ivy Thenga, the Director of Public Prosecutions in Limpopo, welcomed the verdict, reiterating the National Prosecuting Authority's commitment to zero tolerance for child abuse. She extended her gratitude to Kgatla and all those involved in bringing the case to justice, signalling hope that this verdict might act as a deterrent for similar cases in the future.
