The University of South Africa (Unisa) has taken a bold step towards reinforcing its commitment to academic excellence with the launch of a new fully online Academic Integrity Course.

Set to begin in the 2025 academic year, this initiative aims to shape a culture of ethical scholarship and responsibility among students as they embark on their academic journeys.

As education increasingly shifts into the digital realm, Unisa recognises the necessity of guiding students through the complexities of online learning. The Academic Integrity Course is designed not only as an orientation tool but as a crucial resource that empowers students to embrace core values such as honesty, respect, fairness, and accountability.

Topics included in the curriculum will cover the fundamentals of academic integrity, the intricacies of academic writing, the importance of strategies to avoid plagiarism, the ethical utilisation of artificial intelligence, and fostering ethical decision-making in all aspects of assessment and research. The course employs interactive digital tools and scenario-based activities to ensure that students feel equipped to navigate the unique challenges presented by online education.

In a statement regarding the initiative, Professor Zodwa Motsa Madikane, Unisa’s Vice-Principal of Teaching, Learning, Community Engagement, and Student Support, underscored the significance of academic integrity for both the institution and individual students. She remarked, “Academic integrity is more than an academic requirement; it reflects who we are as an institution and as individuals. This course is designed to ensure that every student understands their role in upholding the values that make Unisa a beacon of excellence in higher education.”

Furthermore, the importance of this course is compounded in light of the rise of online assessments. Phindiwe Kamolane, Chairperson of the Examination Committee, noted the dual opportunities and challenges that come with digital evaluation. “Safeguarding the credibility of our assessment processes requires a proactive approach, and this course is integral to the strategy. By understanding and championing academic integrity, students not only strengthen the credibility of their qualifications, but they also demonstrate the principles of ethical leadership,” she stated.

Unisa's launch of the Academic Integrity Course marks a vital effort to embed ethical practices into its educational framework. The institution aims to cultivate graduates who not only achieve academically but also embody ethical principles, preparing them to contribute meaningfully to society. All students are encouraged to make this course a priority during their registration, reinforcing their commitment to the values of academic integrity and excellence.
