Four alleged hijackers appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 10 January 2025, facing serious charges linked to the robbery and theft of an Uber driver’s vehicle.
According to the State, the events unfolded on 8 January 2025 when the accused requested an Uber ride in the upscale Houghton area. It is alleged that instead of reaching a destination, the suspects turned the ride into a crime scene, robbing the driver of his vehicle and cash. The driver did not remain silent; he promptly reported the theft to the vehicle tracking company, which triggered an urgent response from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit.
Thanks to swift police action, the tracking unit successfully pinpointed the location of the hijacked vehicle to a residence in Houghton, historically significant as the former home of the late president Nelson Mandela. Upon entering the premises, authorities apprehended five individuals and were able to recover the stolen vehicle, as well as its number plate and a firearm.
During the robbery, the driver was also reportedly deprived of R800 in cash, alongside an additional R300 stolen from their account. While four suspects now face a range of charges, including robbery with aggravating circumstances, kidnapping, and assault, a fifth individual was released due to insufficient evidence linking them to the alleged crimes. The National Prosecuting Authority says it will continue investigating potential charges against this individual before deciding on prosecution.
The fifth suspect, believed to be the grandson of Mandela, was not be added to the case at this stage.
The court proceedings have been adjourned until 17 January 2025, during which time the focus will be on further investigations and potential bail applications for the accused.
