Gavaza Mongwe is not waiting for a crown to start making a difference. As a Mrs South Africa 2026 semi-finalist, she is already on the ground, driving initiatives focused on education support, youth empowerment, and personal development across Limpopo and Gauteng.
Her first major initiative took place on 26 March 2026 at Lengama Secondary School in Limpopo, where she connected with learners from Grades 8 to 12 through an inspiring session and handed out much-needed stationery. It was a direct response to the realities that many of these learners face daily, where something as simple as a pen or a notebook can make the difference between falling behind and keeping up.
Next up is Pretoria on 16 April 2026, where she will lead a shoe drive for learners who arrive at school without proper footwear. It is the kind of practical, no-fuss intervention that speaks to who Gavaza is. She sees a need and meets it, because no child should miss out on learning due to something as basic as a pair of shoes.
Later that month, on 24 April 2026, she heads to Tshwane University of Technology to speak with final-year engineering students about resilience, career transitions, and self-leadership. It is a conversation she is uniquely positioned to lead, and one that meets young adults right where they need it most, as they prepare to step into the workforce. The events are in collaboration with MH Automotive Engineering Pty Ltd, which is supporting her journey.
She explains that her approach is intentional and grounded in lived experience. “Stepping into the Mrs South Africa platform means so much more to me than a title. It is about showing that our careers, our creativity, and our roles as women can all exist together without us having to shrink one part of ourselves.” She emphasises the importance of closing the gap between personal identity and professional ambition, particularly for women balancing multiple roles.
A personal journey that shaped a public purpose
Mongwe’s initiatives are deeply personal, shaped by her own journey of reinvention. After years in the mining sector, she made the bold move into Data Science, rebuilding her professional identity from the ground up while raising three children. She reflects, “My journey has really been about having the courage to evolve. Raising our three children in the middle of that transition taught me so much about resilience.”
That lived experience gave rise to her career journal, Take the Lead, and the founding of EE Creatives, both born from her belief that growth is a choice and self-leadership is a skill anyone can build. Her community work is an extension of the same conviction, equipping others with the tools and mindset to find their own way forward.
She further explains, “I discovered that my greatest clarity came when I allowed my technical curiosity and my creative side to exist together.” This philosophy now underpins both her professional work and her community initiatives, where she encourages young people to embrace multidimensional growth.
The Mrs South Africa platform brings a bigger stage and a deeper reach
Mongwe earned her semi-finalist spot following a live casting event on 31 January 2026 at Clearwater Mall in Johannesburg, joining more than 100 women in the 2026 programme. The platform comes with workshops, mentorship, and national exposure, but for Gavaza, it is simply a bigger stage for work she was already doing.
Mrs South Africa CEO Joani Jacobs notes the programme’s transformative nature. “Mrs South Africa demands a serious commitment and a high level of discipline. Women tend to discover parts of themselves they never knew existed,” Jacobs said.
For Mongwe, the platform strengthens her ability to reach more communities and deepen her impact. She says, “This year is about demonstrating that dreams don’t die in marriage; instead, when you have an aligned vision, your impact is multiplied.”
Her initiatives will continue throughout the year as the programme progresses, with the top 30 finalists set to be announced in July and the winner crowned in November. But for Gavaza, the focus is firmly on the work already underway. Impact, in her world, is not measured by titles, but by the lives she reaches.
