  • Percy Sleash SA’s dream of owning a radio station began in 2014 when he struggled to break into the industry.
  • Years of persistence and sacrifice kept the vision alive despite financial and personal challenges.
  • His journey is a testament that patience, courage, and belief can turn impossible dreams into reality.

Back in 2014, when the odds seemed firmly stacked against him, Percy Sleash SA made a quiet promise to himself that one day, he would own a radio station. At the time, he was struggling just to secure his own slot on community radio, doors closing faster than they opened, opportunities hard to come by.

“That was when the dream began,” he recalls. “I didn’t want to keep begging for a chance. I wanted to create a space of my own.”

For years, the dream seemed distant. There were countless setbacks, chief among them money. The cost of building a station was overwhelming, and with no investors or sponsors behind him, the idea often felt too heavy to carry. Yet, he never let go.

“I started this journey when doors weren’t opening for me,” Sleash recalls. “I wanted to create my own platform, so I came up with the idea of Tswaing Lokshin FM. That was the seed of what has now become Capital City Radio.”

Today, that seed has grown into a reality. Capital City Radio, proudly branded as The Voice of the City, is an internet radio station designed to serve not only Pretoria but listeners across South Africa and beyond.

“It’s been unreal,” he says today, still adjusting to the fact that what once lived only in his heart is now alive in the world. “Sometimes I can’t believe it’s happening. I just held on, even when things didn’t make sense.”

More than just a career goal

For Percy Sleash, the dream was never just about personal success. It was about rewriting the story for young people like him, those whose voices are often muted or dismissed. “I was once in that space where I wasn’t given a voice. That’s why it means so much to create something where young people can express themselves without fear.”

The fulfilment of his dream is therefore bigger than one man’s achievement. It is proof to a generation that no matter how far-fetched a vision might seem, persistence and courage can carve a way forward.

The hard road to yes

Dreams, of course, don’t blossom without resistance. For Percy, finances remain a stumbling block. Even now, as he brings his vision to life, he continues to wrestle with the realities of running a project without external backing. But he views these hurdles not as a reason to quit but as confirmation that the dream is worth fighting for.

“I’ve learned that if you can dream it, you can definitely do it,” he says. “The path won’t be easy, but it’s possible.”

A lesson for dreamers everywhere

His story is one of patience and resilience. Some 11 years passed between the seed of his idea and the joy of seeing it realised. Along the way, there were plenty of reasons to give up, but he never did.

Now, Percy Sleash SA stands as living proof that dreams have no expiry date. They may take years, even decades, but with unwavering faith and relentless effort, they can and do come true.

For those hesitating to take the leap, his advice is simple: “Don’t overthink it. Just do it. If you can dream it, then you can do it.”
