Mitchells Plain child sexual abuse survivor’s courage sends predator to prison for life

  • The accused was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping his minor sister-in-law from ages six to 15.
  • The court finds him unfit to possess a firearm, work with children, and orders his name entered into national protection registers.
  • Victim’s testimony reveals years of threats, trauma, and betrayal by a trusted family member.

Mitchells Plain has been rocked by a harrowing child sexual abuse case, which culminated with the Regional Court handing down a life sentence to a man who preyed on his minor sister-in-law for nearly a decade.

The victim, now a teenager, was first assaulted at the age of six while left in the care of the accused during a church function. The abuse continued until she was 15, spanning locations from the family’s wendy house to the accused’s workplace.

The court declared the man unfit to possess a firearm, unsuitable to work with children, and ordered his name to be entered into both the National Child Protection Register and the National Register for Sex Offenders. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has withheld his identity to protect the victim from secondary trauma.

Survivor’s courage breaks silence in Mitchells Plain child sexual abuse case

The breakthrough came when the victim confided in a school carer, revealing that the accused had “touched her breasts and private parts.” This disclosure triggered a chain of intervention, from the school’s social worker to the police, that ultimately led to the trial. Despite pleading not guilty and portraying the victim as a liar manipulated by family feuds, the accused was convicted on 10 counts of rape.

Regional Court Prosecutor Sergio Lorenzo Goff led the prosecution with precision, exposing the accused’s calculated manipulation and threats. “She trusted the accused,” Goff told the court, “however, to her dismay, he took away her innocence and took advantage of her from a young age.” He added, “She will never get her childhood back, and the accused, as her boeta, was supposed to protect her and keep her safe.”

The accused’s wife, also the victim’s sister, testified in his defence, but cross-examination revealed that her testimony was influenced by discussions with the accused and fears of financial hardship should he be imprisoned. “If the accused was found guilty and sentenced to a term of imprisonment, my life would change both financially and physically,” she admitted under oath.

The cost of silence in Mitchells Plain child sexual abuse

The victim’s testimony laid bare the emotional toll of years of abuse, including depression, suicidal ideation, nightmares, and a deep fear of not being believed. “She always doubted herself to speak up about what happened as she feared the consequences of losing her family,” Goff said, “and potentially not being believed. She felt alone and experienced bad dreams of what happened to her, and at some stage became suicidal and acted out of anger toward her family.”

The accused’s attempts to paint himself as a good person were dismantled by the court, which noted his dishonesty and willingness to defame the victim’s family as “drunkards, greedy, anti-Muslim, isolated, and abusive towards everyone.” Goff argued that the accused “calculated and manipulated every opportunity to rape her,” and “abused the trust she and her family had in him as their boeta.”

Western Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Nicolette Bell, welcomed the sentence and commended the prosecution and investigation teams for their commitment to justice. “This was a most cruel violation of a child,” she said, “and the sentence reflects the gravity of the crime.”
