The Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) has issued a high-priority warning about WhatsApp fraud and Telegram scams targeting investors.
Fraudsters are impersonating financial service providers, including Brenthurst Wealth Management and financial expert Nicolette Mashile, using deceptive WhatsApp and Telegram groups to solicit funds under false pretenses.
Reports reveal that scammers have falsely claimed association with Brenthurst Wealth Management (Pty) Ltd, misleading investors with deepfake videos and WhatsApp groups supposedly linked to its directors, Magnus Reinier Heystek and Brian Dean Butchart. Brenthurst Wealth has strongly denied any connection to these fraudulent operations, warning that it does not use WhatsApp or Telegram for investment solicitations.
Similarly, the FSCA flagged a Telegram group exploiting the name of financial educator Nicolette Mashile and her initiative, Financial Fitness Bunnies (Pty) Ltd. This group urges unsuspecting individuals to invest a minimum of R2,000, directing payments via bank transfers or Luno wallets. Mashile has publicly distanced herself from these scams, reinforcing the FSCA’s warning that financial operations require proper authorisation in South Africa.
How to identify WhatsApp fraud and Telegram scams
South Africans lose millions of rands annually to fraudulent investment schemes, many originating through WhatsApp fraud and Telegram scams. The FSCA urges the public to watch for these red flags:
* Investment offers promoted via WhatsApp or Telegram instead of legitimate financial platforms
* Unrealistic promises of high returns with minimal risk
* Upfront payment requests or additional fees to unlock investments
* Urgency tactics pressuring immediate action
* Lack of transparency about the investment details
Protect yourself from fraud
To avoid falling victim to WhatsApp and Telegram scams, the FSCA advises verifying financial service providers using official channels:
* FSCA toll-free number: 0800 110 443
* Regulated entity search: FSCA website
* FAIS Act compliance check: FSCA portal
