  • National Wills Week offers free assistance to the public in drafting a Will.
  • The initiative is led by the Justice Department along with legal bodies and partners.
  • Minister Kubayi stresses the importance of Wills for family protection and avoiding disputes.

South Africans will once again have the chance to secure their family’s future through National Wills Week, announced by Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi.

Running from 15 to 19 September 2025, this initiative will provide members of the public with free help in drafting a basic Will. This document is crucial and often overlooked until it is too late.

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development is leading this campaign in partnership with the Law Society of South Africa, Legal Aid South Africa, and other partners. By offering accessible legal services during this week, the program ensures that ordinary people, many of whom cannot afford private legal fees, get the chance to put their wishes in writing and protect their families.

Why a Will matters

Kubayi highlighted that a valid Will is one of the best tools for family security. It ensures that a person’s assets are distributed according to their wishes. It also helps prevent painful disputes and financial strain among surviving family members.

For many households, a Will can make the difference between stability and conflict after the loss of a loved one.

Accessing the service

The public is encouraged to take advantage of the free service during National Wills Week. They can consult with participating legal professionals to draft a basic Will at no cost. Information about the participating firms will be available on the websites of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development and the Law Society of South Africa.
