These cases might not be legal precedents like Constitutional Court judgments, but their real importance is in how they entered the national conversation and became turning points in South Africa’s criminal justice history. From murder trials watched around the world to cases that sparked protests and national debates, they show how individual prosecutions can come to stand for much bigger questions about violence, justice, privilege, and accountability. 1. Oscar Pistorius: The murder trial that gripped South Africa Oscar Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, at his Pretoria home on 14 February 2013. Pistorius argued that he thought he was firing at an intruder, while the State said he intended to kill Steenkamp. He was first found guilty of culpable homicide and sentenced to five years in prison. The State appealed, and the Supreme Court of Appeal changed the conviction to murder, finding that Pistorius acted with criminal intent, known as dolus eventualis. This trial became one of South Africa’s most closely watched criminal cases and a major test for media access to courtrooms, drawing intense public interest in every detail of the case. 2. Nicholas Ninow: The Dros rape case that shocked South Africa Nicholas Ninow was found guilty of raping a seven-year-old girl in the bathroom of a Dros restaurant in Pretoria. The case sparked nationwide outrage because of the young age of the victim and the shocking circumstances. The High Court sentenced Ninow to life in prison for rape, plus more years for drug possession and obstructing justice. Leigh Matthews: The murder that became a defining South African criminal case Leigh Matthews, a 21-year-old student, disappeared in 2004 and was later found murdered. Donovan Moodley was arrested and charged with her murder, kidnapping, and extortion. He eventually pleaded guilty to all three charges in the Johannesburg High Court. Moodley was sentenced to life in prison for murder, 15 years for kidnapping, and 10 years for extortion. Ananias Mathe: The prison escape that exposed security failures Ananias Mathe was infamous for his violent crimes, but he became even more notorious when he managed to escape from the high-security C Max prison in Pretoria. His escape set off a massive manhunt and raised big questions about how secure South Africa’s prisons really are. Mathe was eventually convicted of many serious offences, including rape, attempted murder, and robbery, and was sentenced to roughly 54 years in prison. His case became a symbol of the gaps in South Africa’s prison system and prompted tough questions about security and accountability. 5. Boeremag: The treason trial that tested the new democracy The Boeremag trial centred on a group accused of plotting to overthrow South Africa’s constitutional order, facing charges of treason, terrorism, murder, and sabotage. The long-running trial became one of the most important political criminal cases of the early years of South Africa’s democracy. Several Boeremag leaders were eventually convicted and sentenced to long prison terms. The four were sentenced to 12 years in prison and were later released on parole after serving part of their sentences. Uyinene Mrwetyana: A murder that became a national reckoning with gender based violence Uyinene Mrwetyana, a 19-year-old University of Cape Town student, was raped and murdered in August 2019 by Luyanda Botha, a South African Post Office employee. Her disappearance and death drew national attention and became a key moment in South Africa’s ongoing conversation about violence against women. Botha was sentenced in the Western Cape High Court to three life sentences, one for murder and two for rape, together with five years for defeating or obstructing the ends of justice. Uyinene’s name became a rallying point in protests against gender based violence and a national demand for women to be able to study, work, travel and carry out ordinary daily activities without living under the threat of violence. 8. Jason Rohde: A murder trial exposed the hidden violence behind a privileged life Jason Rohde was convicted of murdering his wife, Susan Rohde, at the Spier Wine Estate in Stellenbosch in July 2016. The State argued that Susan had been strangled and that the scene was staged to make it look like suicide. The Western Cape High Court found Rohde guilty of murder and defeating the ends of justice. He was first sentenced to 20 years in prison, but this was later reduced to 15 years by the Supreme Court of Appeal. The case became part of national conversations about intimate partner violence, privilege, and how forensic evidence can reveal the truth. 9. Henri van Breda: The axe murders that became one of South Africa’s most watched trials Henri van Breda was found guilty of murdering his father Martin, his mother Teresa, and his brother Rudi at their De Zalze home in Stellenbosch in 2015. His sister Marli survived the attack. Van Breda claimed an intruder was responsible. The Western Cape High Court found Van Breda guilty of three murders, attempted murder, and obstructing justice. He was sentenced to three life terms for the murders, 15 years for attempted murder, and more time for obstructing justice. The trial drew huge public and media attention, especially because of the legal fight over media access to the courtroom. 10. Karabo Mokoena: A murder that exposed the brutality of intimate partner violence Karabo Mokoena was 22 when her former boyfriend, Sandile Mantsoe, murdered her in April 2017. Her burnt remains were found in a field in Lyndhurst, Johannesburg, after Mantsoe assaulted and killed her, then tried to cover up the crime by burning her body. The High Court in Johannesburg rejected Mantsoe's claim that Mokoena had taken her own life and found him guilty of murder, assault, and defeating the ends of justice. Acting Judge Peet Johnson sentenced Mantsoe to 30 years for murder, five years for assault and four years for defeating the ends of justice, resulting in an effective sentence of 32 years. In sentencing him, Johnson described Mantsoe as a “devil in disguise” and said he deserved a harsh punishment. The case became one of the defining South African cases highlighting the devastating consequences of abusive intimate relationships and the country's struggle with gender based violence.
