  • The Tim Modise Foundation expresses its gratitude to North-West University for awarding its patron an Honorary Doctorate in Communication Science.
  • The Foundation views the recognition as an acknowledgement of Dr Modise’s contribution to broadcasting, South Africa’s historical evolution and national development.
  • The organisation calls on government and corporate institutions to partner with it on programmes in education, media skills development, public health, sport and youth development.

The Tim Modise Foundation wishes to express its sincerest gratitude to North-West University (NWU) for bestowing an Honorary Doctorate in Communication Science on our distinguished Patron, Timothy Molefe Modise, at the university graduation ceremony in Mahikeng on Thursday, 22 October 2026.

We view this great honour as befitting of the legendary broadcasting career that has spanned more than four decades of excellence. This esteemed doctorate is, in many ways, a symbolic gesture towards our Patron and the Foundation, recognising Dr Modise’s broadcasting work within the country’s historical evolution and national development.

A broadcaster at the country’s political crossroads

Modise stood at the country’s political crossroads with a microphone, essentially getting the nation to talk to itself, in what many South Africans considered an uncertain political and socio-economic environment at the time.

It is timely for NWU to bestow this recognition, as many will remember Dr Modise’s remarkable media work at various broadcasting organisations over the years.

Preserving a living legacy for future generations

For us at the Foundation, this is an important milestone that goes beyond Dr Modise’s personal contribution to the country’s communication and media industry.

The Foundation considers this academic accolade a defining moment in our growth trajectory as we continue to curate and preserve Modise’s living legacy for future generations. Dr Modise belongs to the nation.

Building partnerships to advance community development

It is for this reason that the Foundation stands ready to work with various stakeholders, including government and the private sector.

Consequently, the Foundation calls on corporate businesses and public sector institutions to partner with us in championing life-changing programmes, campaigns and projects in education, communication and media skills development, public health, sport and youth development, among others.
