The bloodied, lifeless body of Kgaogelo Mamogashwa Nnonu lay cold on the streets of Maubane in Hammanskraal. The young woman, whose life was cut short in the early hours of Thursday, 21 August 2025, died at the hands of a man who still insisted in his twisted final words that he “loved her more than life itself.”
Her killer, Mfana Ngwenya, allegedly stabbed her several times outside a popular drinking spot known as Ko Dubai. What followed was a scene so grotesque it has left South Africa numb: Ngwenya recorded a video of Kgaogelo’s lifeless body, drenched in blood, and shared it on his social media platforms. He could be heard cursing her as she gasped her last breath, then weaving a distorted confession in which he tried to justify the unjustifiable.
In one TikTok video, he claimed that he had “done everything” for her, alleging that he cared for her when she was gravely ill and that her parents “didn’t want anything to do with her.” His words, far from revealing love, revealed possession and control, the mindset of a man who believed Kgaogelo’s life was his to take.
The horror has left friends shattered, particularly one who revealed that Kgaogelo had once confided: “He will eventually kill me.” Those words, once a fearful warning, became her fate. Even a protection order, secured against Ngwenya, was not enough to save her.
As of Friday 22 August 2025, Ngwenya’s whereabouts remain unknown. There are fears he may take his own life, having hinted repeatedly that he could not live without Kgaogelo.
Leroy Tau’s soul-wrenching apology
Against this backdrop of blood and grief, the voice of Leroy Tau pierced through the silence of shock. The relationship expert, husband, and father delivered a searing apology, one not for Ngwenya, but on behalf of men everywhere.
“My brother, what you did is cowardly, evil, psychopathic, dark, and outright senseless… I hope her image haunts you, that her last moments echo in your mind, giving you no rest; not today, not tomorrow, not ever.”
Tau’s words deepened in compassion as he addressed Kgaogelo’s grieving mother, who witnessed the unimaginable, the murder of her child before her own eyes:
“On behalf of all men, I apologise that you had to witness such barbarism. I cannot begin to imagine the pain of losing a child in that way. May God comfort you and carry you through this unbearable darkness.”
Walk away, don’t kill; the plea of men
Social media activist and musician Khutsi Sdumane echoed the plea for men to change: “Horrified to see what this kid has done. Message to all the guys out there: walk away. Even if you lose or you are bruised in a relationship. Walk away, my brother. Give it time. In time you will see none of it is worth it, no matter how tough it looks now. Kaosane it gets better.”
A Women’s Month stained in blood
For a country marking Women’s Month, a period meant to uplift and honor women, this killing was not only a tragedy but a slap in the face. The murder of Kgaogelo Mamogashwa Nnonu is not just another crime of passion. It is a testament to the depth of South Africa’s femicide crisis, a reminder that protective orders and promises to mean little against the hand of a man determined to kill.
