On November 25, 2024, a serious incident of child neglect unfolded in Tembisa, leading to the arrest of a mother following intervention by a concerned landlord.
The distressing situation was brought to light when the landlord, accompanied by three young children aged 12, 7, and 2, arrived at the Tembisa Client Service Centre. She reported that the mother had been missing since the previous Friday, leaving the children unattended and vulnerable.
The landlord explained that she had repeatedly confronted the mother about her irresponsible behaviour, warning her about the dangers of leaving the children alone without proper care. Alarmed by the children's welfare, she took it upon herself to seek help from the authorities.
Sergeant Pitsi Makgatho and Sergeant Patricia Mgijima responded swiftly, opening a case of Child Neglect and transporting the children to a place of safety while they began the search for their mother. With the aid of the local community, the mother was soon located and apprehended by the police.
Community leaders expressed their frustration over the mother’s repeated negligence, revealing that they had previously attempted to counsel her through discussions with elder women in the community. They had hoped to instil a sense of responsibility, but their efforts appeared to have gone unheeded.
Sergeant Asnath Mokami addressed the gathered crowd, commending the community for their proactive measures in ensuring the safety of the children. “We are delighted to have community leaders who can contain the situation and be the eyes and ears of the police. It seems we are moving forward,” she stated.
She further emphasised the importance of remaining vigilant, particularly during the festive season. “This time of year often brings excitement that can lead to dangerous situations. Parents must keep a close eye on their children. We will have no mercy for those who abandon their responsibilities,” Mokami warned, underscoring the need for community awareness amid growing concerns for child safety.
The arrest coincided with the commencement of the 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence and femicide, a campaign aimed at addressing key societal issues including child neglect. Sergeant Mokami reminded attendees that such matters should be reported year-round, stressing the significance of being the voice for the voiceless.
