As the sun sets on what would have been their 37th Christmas together, Emma Sibanyoni finds solace in her memories, faith, and commitment to honouring her late husband, Phineas Sibanyoni.
Every year, Christmas Day marks a poignant anniversary for Emma, who chooses to celebrate the life and legacy of Phineas through community engagement and charitable acts. Reflecting on their journey, Emma recounts the serendipitous moment they met at Dr WF Nkomo High School in Atteridgeville on August 11, 1988, during after-school studies.
Six years into their relationship, Phineas proposed on his birthday, December 25, 1994. They would celebrate their traditional marriage in 1995, followed by a white wedding on December 25, 1996. Their union was blessed with three children: Thabiso, Khumo, and Olekanebontle, who are now part of Emma’s legacy.
However, their idyllic life was transformed by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. A devastating turn of events unfolded when their eldest son, Thabiso, and his wife, Nomthi, contracted the virus. Unbeknown to Emma at the time, she and Phineas would be infected as well. Despite the overwhelming challenges, Emma maintained her nurturing role, caring for her family while battling her own illness.
Tragedy struck when Phineas’s health declined rapidly. An agonising video call revealed his serious condition, prompting Emma to take immediate action. She contacted their clinic and insisted on his medical transport, although Phineas resisted hospitalisation for fear of causing her distress. Tragically, he was later found in a state that no loved one could bear to witness. At the hospital, Phineas endured a harrowing battle against Covid-19, compounded by cardiac arrests and kidney failure.

Emma became his unwavering advocate, dedicating every ounce of her strength to his care, visiting him daily even as the world outside grappled with the pandemic’s rampant devastation. However, his condition continued to deteriorate. Despite their relentless hope, Phineas succumbed on October 4, 2020 at Eugene Marais Hospital in Pretoria.
In the aftermath of loss, Emma faced not only her grief but also unjust scrutiny from some in her family who suggested that she bore responsibility for Phineas's death. This deeply hurtful narrative, perpetuated by in-laws and relatives, inflicted additional wounds upon her already fragile heart, making the healing process a complex journey of mourning intertwined with false accusations. “The emotional turmoil has been immense,” Emma said, reflecting on the challenges she continues to face. “But through it all, I’ve found strength in channeling Phineas’s legacy.”
Owing to this unwavering commitment, the DA KLAN and BrosDoMatter Foundations remain cornerstones of her ongoing work. The former is dedicated to empowering individuals in the community, while the latter focuses particularly on supporting young men and mental health. Despite the struggle, Emma is motivated by the love that continues to flourish in her life. “I am grateful for my parents and my siblings, who have stood by me,” she emphasises. “Their support lightens the burden, enabling me to continue the work Phineas loved so dearly.”
Emma’s story serves as a beacon of hope for countless others navigating similar journeys of loss. “To those who have lost a loved one, I want to say you're not alone,” she shares. “Seek solace in your shared memories and embrace the love that endures.” Through philanthropy and advocacy, she aims to uplift other grieving souls, inspiring them to honor their loved ones in nurturing ways. As she recalls Phineas’s love for empowering others, Emma is determined to keep his spirit alive. “Charity begins at home was his ethos, and I intend to ensure that his legacy multiplies as long as I have breath,” she affirms.
