The South African Police Service (SAPS) Charity Golf Day has successfully raised over R11 million which will go towards funding the educational needs of children whose parents lost their lives in the line of duty.
Since its inception in 2010, the South African Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET) Fund has made a significant impact, assisting more than 1,718 children. To date, the trust has proudly facilitated the graduation of 54 students and has seen 146 beneficiaries successfully obtain their National Senior Certificates.
On this momentous occasion, over 100 golfers from various corporate sectors participated in the fundraising event held in KwaZulu-Natal. Together, police officers and business leaders demonstrated their commitment to honouring the brave sacrifices of fallen police personnel. "The generous contributions made today are not just financial; they are a testament to our shared commitment to the families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice," expressed Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu.
Among the success stories is Nombuso Khumalo, daughter of fallen Sergeant Themba Khumalo, who achieved six distinctions in her 2024 matric year. "The SAPSET Fund didn't just pay for my education; they gave me hope when I needed it most," shares Nombuso, who plans to study Medicine at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Through a series of donations and pledges, the South African Police Service Education Trust Fund aims to alleviate the financial anxieties of families left behind by fallen officers. The funds raised will be directed towards educational essentials including uniforms, stationery, and both primary and tertiary education expenses. This year's contribution represents a 15% increase from the previous year's fundraising efforts.

In a remarkable show of excellence, 18 beneficiaries recently achieved outstanding results in their 2024 matric examinations, earning a total of 17 distinctions. The achievements of these young South Africans underscore the initiative's goal of empowering future generations.
"Every rand will ensure that young lives are supported as they pursue their academic dreams," said Vuyani Jarana, chairperson of the SAPSET Fund board. "Today's contributions will have a long-lasting impact on the educational journey of these children."
The SAPS management, including National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, conveyed their heartfelt gratitude to all sponsors and stakeholders involved in this initiative.
