The painful saga of a family's quest for closure following the mysterious disappearance of a father continues to unfold, with little hope of resolution.
Thomas Shaniseka Mashimbye, a 42-year-old worker at the time, went missing under mysterious circumstances allegedly at the Anglo Platinum mine in Rustenburg. His family recalls the turmoil since that fateful day, when he reportedly clocked into the mine but never returned home.
According to records obtained by the Mashimbye family, there is a clear evidence of his entrance to the underground shaft, but no sign of his exit. The inconclusive nature of his disappearance has left the family reeling, struggling to find answers amid the void of communication from the mine management.
"Since our father went missing to date, we are not told what transpired," his son Mbhoni Mashimbye said, his voice thick with emotion. He was aged just 9 at the time of the disappearance of the father. "We have reached out to both Anglo Platinum and SAPS over the years, but we have yet to receive any meaningful information.” He took over the search for his father from his mother, Miluva Khaila Mashimbye, who was last quoted 10 years ago pleading with Anglo Platinum to disclose what happened to her husband. She never got an answer.
Theirs is a crisis compounded by a financial nightmare. In the wake of his disappearance, the family has been forced to navigate the chilling reality of losing not only a beloved father but also their financial support. "Anglo Platinum left us in a desperate situation," lamented the son. "They cut all benefits and salary of our dad without any communication to the family. When we inquired, we were told to obtain a death certificate just to access his funds."
The family resides in Limpopo, and their grief is made more poignant by the absence of information regarding his fate. As the youngest child out of five, Mbhoni Mashimbye recalls feeling helpless and lost when they first learned that their father had gone missing at work.
As the Mashimbye battle for answers and closure intensify, they are determined not to give up hope. “I want to know what happened. It has become difficult, but we are still searching for the truth,” said Mbhoni Mashimbye resolutely. "For us, the Mashimbye family, every day without answers is a stark reminder of the love lost and the questions that linger heavily in the air."
A spokesperson from the SAPS said it was hard to follow up on the matter without a case number because the family did not open a case at the time of their father's disappearance. The family said they never reported the matter to the police because they trusted Anglo Platinum to provide answers.

Anglo Platinum was contacted for clarification on the disappearance of Mashimbye, but had yet to comment due to the complexity of the investigation.
