The South African Police Service’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) units have stepped up their nationwide fight against gender-based violence and femicide. This effort resulted in over 500 arrests and several life sentences within just seven days.
Between 13 and 19 October 2025, detectives from the specialised units arrested 534 suspects across all nine provinces for serious sexual offences, including rape, sexual assault, attempted rape, and related crimes. During this week, courts handed down 13 life terms and an additional 448 years of imprisonment.
According to SAPS, these convictions stem from diligent investigations and careful case preparation by committed FCS investigators. They continue to prioritise the safety and dignity of victims, particularly women and children.
Major convictions in Free State and Limpopo
In one of the most disturbing cases, the Bloemfontein High Court sentenced a 58-year-old Welkom lawyer to three life terms and 61 additional years in prison for the sexual abuse of five minor children. The youngest victim was just seven years old at the time. The stepfather faced charges that included rape, indecent assault, sexual grooming, sexual exploitation of a child, and the production of child sexual abuse material.
In Limpopo, the Polokwane High Court sentenced a 38-year-old serial rapist to 151 years in prison for multiple counts of rape, attempted rape, and robbery. His victims included women and children as young as nine, whom he attacked in and around Hlogotlou, Rakgadi, and Nebo.
Police vow continued action against GBVF
The SAPS praised its officers for their tireless efforts in bringing offenders to justice. “We acknowledge the bravery and commitment of our men and women in blue who ensure that survivors of sexual violence receive justice and dignity,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Amanda van Wyk, SAPS spokesperson.
The police reaffirmed their promise to fight against gender-based violence through ongoing operations, partnerships with communities, and a focus on justice for survivors.
