The chess team from Hoërskool Oos-Moot in Pretoria delivered an exceptional performance at the renowned PUK Chess Series, securing second place in a tournament featuring South Africa’s top school teams.

Competing against formidable opponents such as Menlo Park and Waterkloof, the team’s dedication and rigorous training proved pivotal in their success.

Coach Ushindi Malaba expressed the team’s collective pride, emphasising the months of preparation leading up to the event.  “Placing second is an incredible achievement for our team. We are thrilled to have performed so well,” Malaba stated. “It was a privilege to compete in such a high-calibre event.”

The Yes4Chess initiative, led by dedicated coaches Christiaan Linde, Azile Jack, Boipelo Mkotong and “Shepherd”, has played a crucial role in fostering a strong chess culture at Oos-Moot. The PUK Chess Series not only showcased the expertise but also highlighted the unwavering support from the school and local community.

Competitive spirit and strategic play

From the outset, the team approached the tournament with realistic yet confident expectations. Malaba explained their extensive preparations, which included focused training throughout the first term, refining opening strategies, and engaging in friendly matches with their mentors.

One of the tournament’s most memorable moments came during the semi-final clash against Waterkloof, where Oos-Moot’s grit and strategic play secured a decisive victory.  “That day represented not just a victory, but a testament to our hard work,” Malaba reflected.

Spanning three intense days, the PUK Chess Series tested players’ mental endurance, with rounds stretching up to two hours each. The coaching staff prioritised maintaining players’ focus and composure, ensuring adequate rest between rounds to optimise performance.

The school’s commitment to chess has grown exponentially over the past decade, with expert coaching and student dedication proving to be a winning combination.

Looking ahead: Chess growth at Oos-Moot

As interest in chess continues to rise, the Oos-Moot team’s success is expected to inspire more learners to engage with the sport.  “We hope our journey encourages more students to take up chess,” Malaba said.

Offering advice to young players aiming for excellence, he emphasized the importance of perseverance. “With dedication, hard work, and a passion for the game, anything is achievable. Embrace challenges and learn from your experiences while being surrounded by supportive peers.”
