After nearly two decades of unrest, a Northern Cape family finally achieves closure as the Public Protector South Africa intervenes in a heart-wrenching burial mix-up.
The drama began in July 2004 when Elizabeth Matras died, and her family laid her to rest at Roodenpan Cemetery in Kimberley, adjacent to her mother, Margaret Lawan. "We were certain we had fulfilled her final wishes," says John Lawan, Elizabeth's brother. "The thought that we might have made a mistake never crossed our minds." However, a troubling revelation emerged in 2016 when the Brandt family, seeking to perform traditional burial rites at their relative's grave, discovered that Matras had been buried in their family plot instead.
This discovery caused immense distress for both families. "Finding out that our loved one wasn't where we thought she was for all these years was devastating," explains John Lawan. Seeking resolution, he approached the Public Protector's Northern Cape provincial office in Kimberley on 13 March 2023, citing improper conduct and maladministration by the Sol Plaatje Municipality.
The Public Protector's response was swift and decisive. Through careful mediation, they facilitated a meeting between the Lawan family, the Brandt family, and the Sol Plaatje Municipality. The municipality acknowledged their error and committed to rectifying the situation through a dignified exhumation and reburial process.
"This kind of error affects not just the physical location of a grave, but the spiritual and emotional well-being of entire families," notes the Public Protector SA's Northern Cape provincial representative. "In African culture, proper burial rites and the resting place of our ancestors hold profound significance."
On the agreed date, both families gathered at Roodenpan Cemetery, their shared grief bridging any divisions. Public Protector South Africa representatives, including two investigators and the Northern Cape provincial representative, oversaw the proceedings to ensure dignity was maintained throughout. The Sol Plaatje Municipality demonstrated their commitment to resolution by covering all costs, including those for traditional burial rituals and a new coffin, in accordance with their policies.
The Public Protector commended the Sol Plaatje Municipality's cooperation and their dedication to ensuring that both affected families could find peace and closure. "Today marks a new beginning for our family," Lawan shared after the reburial. "We can finally know that our beloved Elizabeth rests where she wanted to be, next to our mother. This means everything to us."
