The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (Denosa) in Limpopo has expressed its commendation for the diligent work of the SAPS following the arrest of a 27-year-old suspect believed to be involved in a heinous incident that left two nurses physically and sexually assaulted at Ga-Chuene Clinic.
The suspect was apprehended on Saturday in Feke Village, Ga-Maja, within the Capricorn District. Law enforcement officials not only made the arrest but also confiscated a range of items including a 9mm pistol, eight rounds of ammunition, a panga (machete), a laptop, a cellphone, cash, and other stolen property from the suspect’s possession.
This significant arrest follows reports that the suspect was under correctional supervision at the time of the crime and has links to numerous other criminal activities in the Capricorn District. Denosa said this development instills a renewed sense of hope among nurses and the broader community regarding SAPS’s crucial role in combating crime within the province.
In light of the recent events, Denosa is calling on the court to deny bail for the accused as a measure of immediate justice for the affected nurses, who remain hospitalised and are courageously working towards recovery amid the aftermath of this traumatic incident.
Furthermore, Denosa has reiterated its demand for the Department of Health to enhance security measures at all healthcare facilities. It wants the installation of CCTV cameras, security beams, and the urgent repair of unlocked doors to safeguard nurses and patients alike.
As part of a continued protest against violence in healthcare settings, Denosa plans to lead a picket featuring nurses from nearby hospitals and clinics to advocate for the denial of bail when the perpetrator appears in court on Monday 20 January 2025. Services at the clinic remain suspended until further notice.
