• The court imposed four consecutive life sentences for the murder of a mother and her three children in Phola Park.
• Investigation revealed fatal head injuries and led to the arrest of an undocumented Eswatini national.
• Police and prosecutors praised community vigilance for helping secure justice for the victims.

The Breyten High Court, sitting in Mbombela, has sentenced a 57-year-old man to four consecutive life terms for the cold-blooded murder of a mother and her three young children.

The sentence, handed down on Thursday, 22 January 2026, brings to an end a case that has deeply unsettled the Phola Park community for nearly three years.

Africa Thembinkosi Shongwe, a citizen of the Kingdom of Eswatini, received the sentence, bringing closure to a matter that has haunted residents since 2023. The killings shocked the small community, not only because of their brutality, but because the victims were discovered only after neighbours noticed an unsettling absence in the family’s daily routine.

Discovery that shocked a community

The investigation began in February 2023 after neighbours grew suspicious when a mother, known for her punctuality in escorting her children to school every morning, failed to appear for several days. Concern mounted as no movement was seen at the house, and repeated attempts to make contact went unanswered.

When community members approached the residence, they found the house locked from the inside, with all windows tightly shuttered. A disturbing sign soon followed. Witnesses noticed flies buzzing persistently against the glass and bloodstains visible on the floor inside the home, prompting an immediate call to the police.

Police forced entry and were met with a horrific scene. The bodies of the mother and her three children, a young girl and twin boys, were discovered across two rooms of the house. The discovery sent shockwaves through the neighbourhood, leaving residents traumatised and searching for answers.

According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Captain Mpho Nonyane-Mpe, all four victims had succumbed to fatal head injuries inflicted by a sharp object. “A swift investigation soon led to the arrest of Shongwe, who was later revealed to be the biological father of one of the children,” Nonyane-Mpe said.

Charges, guilty plea and sentence

In addition to the four counts of murder, Shongwe was charged with contravening the Immigration Act, as he was residing in South Africa without valid documentation. Investigators gathered extensive evidence linking him to the crime, building a case that prosecutors described as overwhelming.

Facing this substantial evidence, Shongwe pleaded guilty to all charges on 19 January 2026. The court subsequently imposed four consecutive life sentences, a decision that ensures he will remain behind bars for the remainder of his natural life. He was also formally declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Praise for investigators and the community

Mpumalanga police Acting Commissioner, Major-General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised the seamless coordination between investigators and the National Prosecuting Authority, describing the outcome as a testament to disciplined detective work and effective prosecution.

He also extended deep gratitude to the Phola Park community, noting that their vigilance and prompt action were instrumental in uncovering the crime and ensuring that justice was ultimately served. For the families and neighbours left behind, the sentence brings a measure of closure, though the scars of the tragedy remain.
