The University of Fort Hare will officially introduce the Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga International Moot Court Competition on Friday, marking a new chapter in its ongoing efforts to strengthen legal education and advocacy training.

Hosted by the University's Faculty of Law, the competition is named in honour of Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, recognising his impact on South African constitutional jurisprudence, his dedication to legal education, and his longstanding association with the university.
Justice Madlanga is expected to be present at the launch, which will be held at the Miriam Makeba Centre of Performing Arts on the East London campus of the University of Fort Hare.
Honouring a constitutional jurist
According to the university, this competition reflects Fort Hare's commitment to preparing future legal professionals who are grounded in constitutional values, ethical leadership and academic excellence.
The university says the initiative is intended to become an internationally recognised platform where law students can sharpen their legal research, legal writing, advocacy and critical thinking skills through simulated court proceedings.
The competition will also encourage students to engage with current legal and constitutional issues while fostering collaboration among universities, the judiciary and the legal profession.
Judiciary and legal profession to attend
The launch is expected to draw members of the judiciary, legal practitioners, academics, students, government representatives and other key stakeholders.
Expected attendees include Justice Nambitha Dambuza, Professor Charles Maimela, Professor Jose Mastrodi, Chief Magistrate Nazeem Joemath, as well as other distinguished members of the judiciary, academia and the legal fraternity.

The launch will happen on Friday, 7 August 2026, from 10am to 12pm, at the Miriam Makeba Centre of Performing Arts, 24 Church Street, University of Fort Hare East London Campus.
