The South African Youth Council (SAYC) Tshwane has issued a stern condemnation following the report of brutal treatment of patrons at the Zanzou nightclub in Pretoria.

Eyewitness accounts reveal harrowing instances where patrons were not only subjected to physical assaults, but were also forced into degrading acts, allegedly due to unpaid bills.

In a passionate statement, SAYC Tshwane expressed deep concern over what they describe as not just an assault on the victims’ dignity, but a blatant disregard for fundamental human rights. These incidents raise serious questions about the adequacy of security protocols and the management practices in place at Zanzou, leading to an environment where such violent behaviour could thrive unchecked.

The statement further read, “We firmly denounce any establishment that resorts to such brutal and inhumane treatment of its patrons. This is simply unacceptable.” The call for immediate action includes urging the relevant authorities to shut down Zanzou until a thorough and transparent investigation is conducted. SAYC Tshwane promised to advocate for the closure of the venue should the authorities fail to respond swiftly.

“This issue transcends mere misconduct; it is rooted in public safety and the essential respect for human rights,” the statement further read. The organisation articulated concerns over similar incidents potentially occurring at other establishments and called for comprehensive reviews of security protocols to ensure personnel are well-trained and adhere to strict codes of conduct.

In a display of solidarity, SAYC Tshwane extended support to the victims, encouraging them to seek legal recourse and report the aggression to local law enforcement agencies. The council reiterated their commitment to advocating for a secure and respectful environment for all citizens in South Africa.

Meanwhile, Not In My Name International, which also called for the closure of Zanzou, said it is appalling that business establishments resort to such vile measures. “This blatant disregard for human rights and dignity is unacceptable. When powerful individuals and establishments weaponise sexual offense, it has far-reaching consequences that erode the fabric of our society,” it said in a statement.

“We urge the social media community to refrain from circulating the videos and images of the victims, as this constitutes revenge porn and sexual offense, leading to secondary victimisation and further harm to the victims.”
