  • A 19-year-old has appeared in the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court on a murder charge after a fatal New Year’s Day stabbing.
  • Police say a dispute escalated into a violent confrontation that left a 30-year-old man dead at a residence in Uitkyk.
  • Mpumalanga police have urged communities to resolve conflicts peacefully as the accused remains in custody.

While many ushered in the hope of a New Year, tragedy struck the community of Uitkyk.

On Monday, 5 January 2026, 19-year-old Katlego Gift Legjane made his first appearance in the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court, facing a charge of murder following a fatal confrontation on New Year’s Day.

Celebrations were cut short in the early hours of Thursday, 1 January 2026. At approximately 3.50am, Middelburg police were summoned to a residence in the area following reports of a stabbing.

Police describe a violent escalation

According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, officers arrived to find the lifeless body of 30-year-old Senzo Nhlakanipho Khumalo, bearing the marks of a brutal assault. Despite the swift arrival of paramedics, Khumalo was declared dead at the scene.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that a series of altercations shattered the peace. It is alleged that an initial dispute between the victim and the suspect escalated into a second, more violent confrontation,” said Mdhluli. Mdhluli added that during this final clash, Khumalo sustained the injuries that claimed his life.

Teenager traced and arrested in Uitkyk

The suspect allegedly fled the scene shortly after the incident, but was swiftly traced and apprehended by police later the same day in Uitkyk. The case against Legjane has been postponed to 12 January 2026 for a formal bail application. He remains in custody.

Court proceedings and a call for peaceful dispute resolution

Mpumalanga police Acting Commissioner, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, addressed the underlying issue of conflict in the province, condemning the act and urging citizens to seek help in resolving disputes.

“We urge members of the public to try and resolve disputes amicably rather than resorting to violence,” Mkhwanazi said.
