The Lady of Peace Community Foundation (Lopeco) stands as a beacon of hope, transforming lives, advocating for social justice, and making a positive impact on South Africans.

As grassroots initiatives blossom into recognised movements, Lopeco embodies the belief that every community holds a 'Lady of Peace', the steadfast figure nurturing harmony within households and beyond.

The essence of its name not only honours these women but also marks a commitment to fostering peace and justice, particularly for the vulnerable, including women, children, and marginalised groups. The foundation champions ideals such as dignity, inclusivity, and community-driven action, believing in empowering residents to become agents of change in combating gender-based violence (GBV) and promoting health security.

Since its inception, Lopeco has evolved from a humble peacebuilding initiative into a formidable organisation influencing various sectors. With a focus on GBV prevention and youth empowerment, its trajectory has integrated strategic partnerships and community programmes, elevating its reach to local and international advocacy platforms.

  • Foundation Achievement Highlights:
  • Establishment of Peacekona Community Clubs, which serve as safe spaces for discourse and action on social justice and GBV.
  • Launch of the Orange Your World Campaign in schools, which focuses on mental well-being and violence prevention.
  • Active participation in national advocacy, influencing the National Strategic Plan on GBVF.
  • Leading initiatives for health security and epidemic preparedness across South Africa.

Success stories abound, with the Orange Your World Campaign notably impacting learners at Isekelo Primary School in Tembisa and Taolelo Primary School in Madiba A Makgabane village. Through the initiative, young people coping with trauma have found solace and expression in the Orange Diaries, paving the way for early intervention and fostering strong collaborations between schools and communities.

Despite its victories, Lopeco faces challenges, notably funding constraints and resistance to gender justice initiatives. However, resilient strategies like strengthening multi-sectoral partnerships and engaging youth and grassroots leaders have remarkably enabled the foundation to navigate these hurdles.

Lopeco's approach to measuring impact transcends mere statistics; it is about real stories of change, derived from community feedback, case studies, and monitoring frameworks. This emphasis on authentic local experiences ensures that the foundation’s interventions are genuinely reflective of the community's needs.

To amplify its efforts, Lopeco thrives on the support of volunteers, termed 'Paeceteers', and collaborations with various partners, including governmental and non-governmental organisations. Through this collaborative spirit, Lopeco invites individuals and organisations to engage, whether it's through volunteering, networking, or financial support.

Gender-based violence remains a critical focal point for the foundation. As an impediment to societal progress, Lopeco strives to create environments where everyone can thrive, free from fear and discrimination. This commitment has led to a new focus on health security, recognising the intersection of public health with peace and social justice. Through proactive advocacy on epidemic preparedness, Lopeco ensures community engagement shapes health policies, aiming for a resilient approach to public health crises.

Dieketseng Diale, the executive director of Lopeco, embodies the spirit of the foundation. Her dedication to grassroots impact reminds us that real change often starts from humble beginnings. “Start with passion, patience, and persistence,” she advises aspiring activists, “build genuine relationships, listen to the people you serve, and don't be afraid to start small.”

Looking to the future, Lopeco is steadfast in its goals, aiming to expand its community clubs, deepen health security advocacy, and increase youth leadership in peacebuilding. What remains at the core of this endeavour is the belief in the transformative power of community, a belief that resonates in every story of change and every life touched by their mission.
