The Pretoria Magistrates’ Court has sentenced 38-year-old Trevor Nolan to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his pregnant girlfriend, Monica Matrose, aged 28.

This tragic event, which unfolded on the night of 9 December 2023. Nolan and Matrose, both street dwellers frequently residing at the corner of Park and Wessels Streets in Sunnyside, were embroiled in a violent altercation that escalated late that fateful evening.

Witnesses recounted the couple’s heated argument, which turned disastrous when Nolan lost control and stabbed Matrose multiple times in the neck and chest with a pair of scissors before fleeing the scene.

Victim’s final moments leave community in shock

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Matrose, despite her devastating injuries, managed to crawl to another street dweller and describe the attack. Unfortunately, her body was discovered at the same location in the early hours of the following morning, leaving the local community in shock.

Nolan was apprehended two days later, on 11 December 2023, and has remained in custody ever since. During his court appearance, he pleaded guilty but requested a lesser sentence, citing his responsibilities as a father to three other children. However, State Prosecutor Mpho Monyane strongly opposed this request, calling attention to the horrific nature of the crime and the fact that Matrose was pregnant with Nolan’s child at the time of her death.

Criminal history influences court’s decision

Monyane also highlighted Nolan’s criminal history, which includes convictions for serious offences such as housebreaking and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The prosecutor’s calls for the maximum sentence resonated deeply within the courtroom, as issues of gender-based violence (GBV) remain tragically rampant across South Africa.

“The accused has demonstrated a pattern of violent behaviour that society cannot tolerate,” Monyane told the court during proceedings. “This was not a crime of passion but a deliberate act against a vulnerable woman carrying his own child.”

The court agreed with the prosecution’s stance, strongly condemning Nolan’s actions and emphasising his failure to protect the very mother of his unborn child. The magistrate noted that Nolan’s other children were already in the care of social workers and declared that there were no substantial and compelling circumstances to avoid the minimum sentence stipulated by law.

NPA reaffirms commitment to fighting gender-based violence

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the court’s decision, reaffirming its commitment to combatting gender-based violence and femicide, and recognising the profound societal implications surrounding these grave issues.

“This sentence sends a clear message that our justice system views crimes against women and unborn children with the utmost severity,” said NPA spokesperson in a statement following the verdict.
