The Legal Practice Council (LPC) has appealed to the public for information following the tragic killing of Chinnette Gallichan, a 35-year-old non-practising legal practitioner.

Gallichan was shot near the CCMA offices in the Johannesburg CBD on Monday, 23 March 2026. She was carrying out her professional duties in labour law at the time. Reports indicate that Gallichan was followed by two unidentified suspects shortly before she was shot and killed.

Public appeal for information

LPC Chairperson Advocate Pule Seleka urged members of the public to come forward with any information that may assist in identifying the suspects. He said, “We urge members of the public to provide law enforcement authorities with any information that may assist in ensuring that the perpetrators of this crime are brought to book and face the full might of the law.”

Seleka also addressed the seriousness of the attack within the legal context. He said, “Any attack on a legal practitioner should be regarded as an attack on the rule of law. It shakes the very foundations of our constitutional democracy, and every effort must be made to ensure that those behind such heinous crimes are held accountable.”

Work and loss to the legal profession

The LPC extended its deepest condolences to Gallichan’s family, colleagues, and the wider legal fraternity. “We stand with all those who are grieving her loss during this incredibly difficult time,” Seleka said.

He added, “The role legal practitioners play in advancing democracy can never be overstated.”

The matter remains under active investigation, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
