The South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg has sentenced convicted serial rapist Musa Maicana, 27, to three life terms, equivalent to 75 years before parole eligibility, plus an additional 300 years for a string of violent crimes committed between April 2014 and June 2019. The cumulative sentence exceeds 375 years, effectively ensuring Maicana will never be released.
Maicana faced 43 charges, including rape, kidnapping, armed robbery, and possession of a dangerous weapon. His victims, women walking home in Tembisa and Norkem Park, were ambushed from behind, threatened with a firearm or knife, and dragged into secluded areas where they were robbed and raped. The attacks followed a consistent modus operandi, leaving communities gripped by fear and survivors without answers.
The breakthrough came in June 2019, when Sergeant Lesford Mangwale, investigating a separate rape case, linked Maicana to 12 other incidents through DNA evidence. His arrest marked the beginning of a comprehensive prosecution led by Senior State Advocate Adele De Klerk, who urged the court to impose the maximum penalty. “The accused displayed a total disregard for the dignity and physical integrity of the victims,” she argued, calling for his permanent removal from society.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), in collaboration with the Criminal Justice Cluster, welcomed the judgment as a milestone in its aggressive stance against violent crime. “These convictions bring justice and closure to the victims and their families,” said NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane. “They also reaffirm our commitment to removing violent criminals from our streets.”
