The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is taking a firm stand against gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa's communities.
In Eshowe, a 38-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison for raping a 19-year-old woman, who later died. A 45-year-old father in Upington received three life sentences for repeatedly raping and assaulting his 14-year-old daughter. The Mtubatuba Regional Court gave a 56-year-old man a life sentence for raping his five-year-old granddaughter in Gengele.
The violence isn’t limited to children. In Limpopo, a 101-year-old woman was raped by a 28-year-old man. In Upington, a man got 18 years for sexually abusing four boys aged eight to 10. Four men in the Free State were each sentenced to 15 years for a violent crime spree that left two people dead, two women raped, and a community traumatised.
A 32-year-old man who murdered his mother was sentenced to 20 years in the Northern Cape, showing that violence against women in the home is also punished harshly.
In Mpumalanga, justice was served when a 33-year-old man was sentenced to 15 years for raping a 20-year-old woman in Badplaas.
Support for victims and their families
The justice system isn’t just about punishment. The NPA works with the courts to make sure victims get support. "Professional help is provided to victims, especially children, to reduce trauma," says the NPA. Children often testify through an intermediary, making it easier for them to speak out.
Thuthuzela Care Centres give victims medical care, counselling, and legal help. In court, Victim Impact Statements are read to help judges understand how much harm has been caused.
