- The accused pleaded guilty to 119 charges involving sexual offences against three children between 2015 and 2024.
- His crimes included rape, sexual grooming, sexual exploitation, trafficking, kidnapping, attempted murder and child pornography offences.
- The Welkom Regional Court handed down three life sentences and additional prison terms totalling 653 years, along with further restrictions.
Christiaan Francisco Fortleza van der Linde, 37, has received three terms of life imprisonment and an additional 653 years after admitting guilt to 119 charges relating to sexual offences committed against three minor victims over nine years.
The magistrate delivered the sentences in the Welkom Regional Court, which was sitting as a designated Sexual Offences Court, on 2 November 2026. The charges stemmed from one criminal case from Odendaalsrus and two from Welkom.
The offences included sexual grooming of children, sexual assault, rape of a minor, sexual exploitation, compelled self-sexual assault, exposing a child to pornography, creating, possessing and distributing child pornography, child abuse, trafficking in persons, kidnapping, attempted murder and defeating the administration of justice.
Victims were groomed and sexually exploited over several years
The investigation, led by Warrant Officer Jessica Saayman of the Welkom Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, found that the accused abused positions of trust to access the victims.
Van der Linde began grooming the first victim between 2015 and 2020, when she was between 12 and 17 years old. The second victim was groomed between 2022 and 2024, when she was between 11 and 14. He repeatedly assaulted and raped the victims, exploited them, and used them to create child pornography, which he then sold and distributed on a pornographic website.
When his crimes were uncovered, the accused trafficked and kidnapped the second victim, tried to kill the child and himself, and destroyed evidence by damaging electronic devices. He also manipulated the second victim into creating child pornography involving a third minor, without that child’s knowledge.
Three life sentences imposed for rape and trafficking
He received three life terms on counts 3, 14 and 17, which related to rape of a minor and trafficking in persons. The court sentenced him to five years for each count of sexual grooming, sexual assault, exposing a child to pornography, and creating and possessing child pornography. Sexual exploitation and distribution of child pornography attracted 10 years for each count.
Van der Linde also received 15 years for attempted murder, five years for kidnapping, and three years for defeating the administration of justice. The sentences are to run concurrently with the life terms, resulting in an additional 653 years in prison alongside the three life sentences.
The court ordered that his details be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders. He was declared unfit to possess a firearm, prohibited from working with children and barred from using electronic devices while serving his sentence.
State details prolonged pattern of abuse
During sentencing, prosecutor Elma van Niekerk argued that the man’s actions were not a single mistake but a sustained pattern of behaviour directed at children over several years. The State said he was manipulative and abused relationships of trust, arguing there were no compelling reasons to depart from the minimum sentences required by law.
Four victim impact statements prepared by Court Preparation Officer Rosie Dube were presented, describing the immense trauma suffered by the victims and their families. The court said it was shocked and repulsed by the man’s conduct and exploitation of the children’s trust.
The investigation showed how perpetrators of sexual offences against children often use grooming, gifts, attention and secrecy to gain access to victims, rather than relying on physical force at first. Offenders may pose as trusted family friends, partners or caregivers, isolate children and gradually normalise abusive behaviour.
Technology was used to record, store and distribute child pornography, as well as to destroy evidence once the crimes were discovered. Early reporting, preserving electronic devices and cooperation among investigators, prosecutors, court preparation officers and social workers were all critical to securing guilty pleas on all charges without forcing the victims to endure a long trial.
The victims were left suicidal and severely traumatised, with long-lasting emotional, psychological and social effects. The continued circulation of child pornography means victims are exposed to repeated victimisation, as the location of intimate photos and videos remains unknown.
Police urge parents to recognise grooming signs
The South African Police Service has urged parents, guardians, educators and community members to stay alert and protect children from sexual exploitation.
Adults are encouraged to speak openly with children about body safety, personal boundaries and their right to say no. Parents and guardians should also monitor children’s use of phones, social media and messaging apps and know who they communicate with.
SAPS warned that too much attention, gifts, requests to keep secrets and attempts by adults to spend unsupervised time with children may be signs of grooming.
The public is urged to believe children when they disclose abuse and to report suspected offences immediately. People are cautioned not to confront suspects or delete messages, photos or devices that could be evidence.
Suspected sexual offences against children can be reported at the nearest police station or FCS Unit. The public can also contact SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or Childline on 116.
Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Solomon Lesia welcomed the sentence and praised Saayman, Van Niekerk, Court Preparation Officer Rosie Dube and everyone involved in securing the convictions.
