  • The AIP celebrates two decades of strengthening South Africa’s independent media sector.
  • A commemorative dinner will be held on 13 November 2025 in Johannesburg.
  • With nearly 200 publications, AIP continues to amplify marginalised voices and uphold press freedom.

When the big media houses walked away, small publishers didn’t fold; they stood up. They pooled their strength, sharpened their focus, and built something new: the Association of Independent Publishers.

That was 20 years ago. Since then, the AIP has become the backbone of South Africa’s community media, a network of nearly 200 publications that report in every official language, from every corner of the country. These are the papers that show up when no one else does. They tell the stories that matter, even when the spotlight is dim.

Founded in 2005 through the merger of the Community Press Association (CPA) and the Independent Media Alliance (IMA), the AIP emerged during a critical moment. In 2003, when large publishing groups withdrew from the CPA, independent publishers saw the chance to redefine their mission. What followed was a historic shift, a unified body focused on the needs of small, community-based publications.

A celebration of resilience and representation

On 13 November 2025, the AIP will host a celebratory dinner at the Holiday Inn, Sunnyside Park, Johannesburg. The event will bring together publishers, media partners, and stakeholders to reflect on the sector’s growth and recommit to the values that sustain it.

From township newsletters to rural bulletins, the AIP’s members have kept communities informed, connected, and empowered, even when resources were scarce and recognition was slow to come. Their work has helped shape public discussion, hold local leaders accountable, and preserve the everyday realities of South Africans across generations.

As the media landscape continues to change, the AIP remains a vital force in advocacy, building capacity, and defending press freedom. Donations are welcome from those unable to attend, ensuring the organisation’s work continues to thrive.
