As National Wills Week 2025 gets underway, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, has shown her personal commitment to family security by drafting her own Will at the Johannesburg Master’s Office.
The process was witnessed by Law Society of South Africa (LSSA) President, Nkosana Mvundlela, and facilitated by attorney Anastasia Gungapursad of Gascoigne Randon & Associates, representing the Johannesburg Attorneys Association.
Kubayi’s decision to publicly draft her Will sends a powerful message that planning for the future is not just a legal formality, but an act of love and responsibility. “Having a Will ensures that your loved ones are cared for and that your wishes are respected,” she said, encouraging all South Africans to take advantage of the campaign.
Bringing legal services directly to the community
To ensure that more South Africans can access these vital services, the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development is hosting a community engagement event in Pietermaritzburg on 16 September 2025. This gathering at the Edendale Lay Centre in Plessislaer, in partnership with the LSSA and other stakeholders, will give residents the chance to learn about the importance of having a valid Will, and to receive free, on-site assistance with drafting one.
Many families may not realise how essential a Will can be in preventing unnecessary conflict and financial uncertainty after a loved one’s passing. By making the process accessible and free, National Wills Week aims to empower people from all walks of life to secure their families’ futures.
Accessible legal support across South Africa
Throughout National Wills Week, help desks are available at Master of the High Court offices, courts, and legislatures in every province. Attorneys from the LSSA, Legal Aid South Africa, the South African Women Lawyers Association, and other partners are ready to help anyone draft a basic Will at no cost.
Kubayi urges everyone, especially those who have not yet made a Will, to use this opportunity. “A valid Will is one of the most important steps you can take to bring security and peace of mind to your family,” she emphasised.
