The anguished cry of a mother echoed outside the Johannesburg High Court this week as justice was finally served for six-year-old Amantle Samane. Her killer, 25-year-old Sara Phethe Simiao, was sentenced to two life terms for her rape and murder in Orlando East in October 2024. He also received additional years for kidnapping and immigration offences.
For Amantle’s mother, Ntombizodwa Samane, the sentence marked a painful but important moment. Fighting back tears, she told journalists: “Enough is enough, it’s enough now. Innocent children in South Africa have died at the hands of men. This sentence will deter others before they think of committing this kind of a crime.”
Community shaken, mother speaks out
Amantle’s disappearance had shaken the Orlando East community. Neighbours and relatives joined in the desperate search until a witness came forward, recalling the little girl walking with Simiao. Their information led to the grim discovery of her lifeless body in a shack.
State Advocates Zamikhaya Staffa and Matshediso Phatlanyane fought for the maximum sentence, relying on the chilling facts of the case and the mother’s Victim Impact Statement. The court agreed that Simiao’s belated guilty plea was a ploy, not remorse, and that his crimes were “cruel, calculated, and deserving of the harshest penalty.”
KwaZulu-Natal cases reinforce strong message
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the ruling, describing it as a milestone in the fight against crimes against women and children. “Perpetrators of gender-based violence and violent crimes against children will be held fully accountable,” said spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane.
The strong message was echoed in KwaZulu-Natal, where courts finalised equally harrowing cases. In Mtubatuba, a 34-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment plus five years for the rape and sexual assault of two children, aged seven and five. The abuse happened during a traditional ceremony in December 2023, with relatives walking in on the incident.
In Ulundi, a 43-year-old man received a life sentence for repeatedly raping a 20-year-old mother in 2022. In her Victim Impact Statement, the survivor said she still suffers flashbacks and fears leaving home alone.
Justice and healing for survivors
In both KwaZulu-Natal cases, prosecutors presented testimony from guardians, medical professionals, and community witnesses, along with the deeply personal words of survivors. The offenders were declared unfit to own firearms and placed on the National Register for Sex Offenders.
For the NPA, these cases underline a simple truth that justice for women and children is non-negotiable. Every conviction, prosecutors say, is a stand against a scourge that leaves families shattered and communities living in fear.
As Samane reminded the nation, justice is not just about one sentence, it is about restoring hope that children’s lives are valued, and their killers will never walk free.
